This is the industry standard for sizing text applied to large-format printing.  The proper size for your text has a direct relationship to the distance your subject is from the signage.  The further away the subject is from the signage, the larger the text should be.  This seems obvious, but you still need to know how large to make the text for each distance in order to maximize the impact on your subject.
